Mission & Vision

A Path Rooted in Wisdom, Compassion, and Merit

The Western Bodhisattva Ministry (WBM) is a modern, Western-focused ministry based on the essential teachings of the Buddha and the Bodhisattva path while harmonizing with Stoic principles. The ministry is non-monastic and encourages lay practitioners to live ethical, disciplined lives while forming families to bring forth children who can continue on the Bodhisattva path.

  • No dependence on traditional Buddhist or Zen lineages. The ministry derives its authority from the Dharma itself, not from institutional or cultural affiliations.
  • No Asian or Far Eastern cultural traditions. WBM presents Buddhism free from foreign cultural influences that may not resonate with Western practitioners.
  • A focus on personal discipline and ethical living. Members are encouraged to cultivate virtue, merit, and responsibility in all aspects of life.
  • An engaged, online community. While online-centered, WBM fosters local, in-person meetups for support, discussion, and community growth.

Foundational Teachings

The ministry’s spiritual foundation is built upon:

  • The Four Noble Truths – Understanding the nature of suffering and its cessation.
  • The Eightfold Path – Living a life of wisdom, virtue, and meditative practice.
  • The Bodhisattva Vow – Dedicating oneself to the liberation of all beings through wisdom and compassion.
  • ZenStoa Philosophy – Integrating the disciplined, practical wisdom of Stoicism with Zen insights.

The Western Bodhisattva Code

WBM members abide by the Ten Bodhisattva Precepts, emphasizing:

  • Respect for life, honesty, patience, diligence, ethical conduct, and wisdom.
  • Recognition that family life is a means of cultivating virtue.
  • The rejection of ideologies or behaviors that weaken the moral fabric of society.
